I had a very progressive teacher, Mrs Harvey at Adams City High School who introduced a college prep class called Critical Thinking. This class rocked my thinking and my world. The first class was by invitation only and there was only one class. I cannot begin to thank her enough for being a part of this and her teaching me this in high school.

Critical Thinking is INSANELY important. I didn't realize just how important it was until I went back to college (im 24 and graduate in May). I thought I was a good write before, but now I'm an even better one and it's all thanks to critical thinking.

Okay, what I am going to say here might be a little off topic, but I think it will be a great addition to this post:

I play table tennis. I actually play table tennis every single day.

One very important skill that is needed in table tennis is reaction and critical thinking. You can't delay and think "okay, I will hit a defensive stroke instead of offensive". You have to think fast. I really think that table tennis develops critical thinking and I recommend play it to everyone, because it is a great game

I do think that many people think too much. Now, before you jump down my throat, I truly believe that yes, we do need to think and often! My only argument is that there is too much thinking of the WRONG kind (automatic, uncritical & "compulsive" as Dating Master points out,) and not enough QUALITY thinking.

If we were mindful and really did think things through, we would not get ourselves in so many messes.

The problem isnt critical thinking, it's compulsive thinking. Most of us think all the time and we dont know how to shut it off. If we can be in the present moment and think when WE choose to thing, rather than thinking all the time against our will, then when we think critically our minds will be more focused. Not thinking is the key to thinking clarity.

I have students in HS geometry that still expect answers that are natural numbers. Students in Calculus think that a problem is a lot of work if it takes more a third of a page, and are shocked if it requires them to use information or a different technique then the one for the section the problem is in. They are always surprised that at the end of most problems I try to reason if the answer makes sense or not based off of graphs etc.

As a person in the latter end of the middle years (50s), with children who are polishing their minds in college and grad school, I don't see in any of this interesting "discussion" the notion of how developing critical thinking, problem-solving, language, and all such liberal education skills is about developing the mind for lifelong adaptive use.
